Job Title: Senior R&D Scientist
Minimum Education: Masters in Materials Science, Physics, Glass Science or similar
Minimum Years of Experience: 1 year of relevant research and development experience
Number of Individuals Managed: 1
Acquire and analyze synchrotron x-ray and neutron scattering data on liquids, glasses and disordered materials from ambient to extreme conditions
Select materials to test and validate x-ray and neutron instrument performance
Synthesize and characterize glass and ceramic materials
Design experiments to expand instrument capabilities and assist with instrument design and optimization
Design and implement x-ray spectroscopic studies using synchrotron radiation on molten materials.
Prepare proposals and submission requests for synchrotron and spallation neutron experiments that use national laboratory user facilities
Prepare and submit work for publication in respected peer reviewed journals and for project reports
Present research at national and international conferences and meetings
Collaborate with beamline scientists and engineers at the Advanced Photon Source, the Spallation Neutron Source and other facilities as needed
Model the structure and properties of disordered materials using molecular dynamic and perform Empirical structural modeling based on experimental data
Assist in creating and preparing documents for patent filings
Assist in creating and preparing documents for Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and other grant proposals
Supervise junior staff member(s) and COOP students
Communicate instrument capabilities and relevant research to potential clients as required
Minimum Skills Required: Acquire and analyze synchrotron x-ray and neutron scattering data on liquids, glasses and disordered materials from ambient to extreme conditions; Design experiments to expand instrument capabilities and assist with instrument design and optimization; Assist in creating and preparing documents for patent filings, Prepare experiment proposals and submission requests for synchrotron and spallation neutron experiments that use beamtime at national laboratory user facilities; Prepare and submit work for publication in respected peer reviewed journals and for project reports.

Travel: Approximately 5% based on conference presentations and visits to customers
